Child Protection Training

A child protection and community services workforce for the future

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are over represented in the child protection system. While we provide support to these children and families, there is a real shortage of qualified Indigenous people working to protect kids in Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities.

We know from experience that Indigenous families do better if they have access to a family worker they can relate to. Equipping Indigenous people with skills and opportunities to work within their own communities is one of the most effective ways to treat and reduce child abuse and neglect and close the gap of disadvantage between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

How we help

In 2007, ACT for Kids set out to work with other regional service providers to address the need to recruit and retain skilled community service workers. This consultative and collaborative framework became the foundation for ACT for Kids' Indigenous Workforce Strategy (IWS).

The ACT for Kids IWS Cadetship Program was designed to equip Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with community service qualifications and practical job experience. Our IWS team deliver training and mentor cadets through their Certificate III and IV in Community Services Work and work placement.

The results have been very impressive. In 2009, seven of the 12 graduates secured full time employment. Four cadets went on to study their Diploma in Community Services. In 2010, nine of the 12 cadets successfully completed their Certificate III, seven completed their certificate IV, and five graduates have secured ongoing employment prior to graduating.

Our IWS graduates have strengthened the child protection and community services workforce and particularly benefit North Queensland communities.
